Thich Nhat Hanh has been a pioneer in introducing mindfulness to the West since the early 1970s, developing new ways to apply ancient knowledge to the challenges of modern life.

Mindfulness is a type of energy we generate when we bring our mind back into our body and engage with what is happening within and around us in the present moment. We become aware of our breath and return to our body, fully present to ourselves and whatever we are doing. The energy of mindfulness helps us engage deeply with life throughout the day, whether we are brushing our teeth, washing dishes, going to work, eating a meal, or driving a car. We can be mindful while standing, walking, or lying down; as we speak, listen, work, play and cook. Mindfulness is not hard work. It is very pleasant and relaxing and we don't need any extra time for it. There is an art to finding creative ways to generate the energy of mindfulness, peace and happiness in everyday life. And when we practice mindfulness with others in community, as we do at EIAB, we generate a powerful collective energy that can help bring about healing and transformation for both ourselves and the world.
